Newfoundland

It is true in Newfoundland like few other places that photographers are at the mercy of the weather. I had to cut a trip short due to storm after storm. These images are from around St. John's, followed by Cape St. Mary's and Gros Morne National Park (a UNESCO World Heritage Site). The ecological reserve at Cape St. Mary's protects nesting seabirds, and provides visitors with unparalleled access to view and photograph this unique site. Bird Rock is covered with thousands of Northern Gannets (sula bassanus). I arrived late one evening in the fog and was encouraged to still 'go see' by the staff, and they were right! The next morning was clear and I spent four hours photographing and just watching the birds soar overhead. A truly amazing place. Watch for the crows stealing eggs from the murres and kitiwakes.
